We are part of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization.

Prof. Dr. Theo Geisel is head of the Department of Nonlinear Dynamics, director at the Max-Planck-Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization and Professor at the Faculty of Physics at the Georg-August-University Göttingen. Research conducted in the Department is primarily concerned with the dynamics of complex systems. On the one hand we are working on physical problems like transport in nanostructures and quantum chaos. On the other hand, applying methods from nonlinear dynamics we study the dynamics of complex biological networks, the spreading of modern epidemics, and many problems in neuroscience that can be addressed by theoretical and computational methods.

Prof. Dr. Marc Timme heads the independent Research Group Network Dynamics and is Faculty member of the two graduate schools Physics of Biological and Complex Systems and Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience at the Georg-August-University Göttingen. We are trying to understand the structure and dynamics of complex networks in physics and biology with a focus on the analysis and modeling of the activity of neural networks in the brain. We also develop mathematical tools required for understanding these highly complex systems. Furthermore, the team of the Network Dynamics Group works on foundations and applications in the areas of computer science, statistical physics of disordered systems, artificial neural networks and robotics, and, more recently, gene evolution and power grids.
