We describe the dynamics of hierarchically organized populations of coupled oscillators with equations for the order parameters. A relation between two approaches (Watanabe-Strogatz and Ott-Antonsen) is discussed. We focus on effects due to nonlinear coupling, in particular on self-organized quasiperiodicity and self-emerging chimeras.
