Cortical reorganization during brain growth

In cat visual cortex, the period of postnatal cortical growth largely overlaps with the period of enhanced plasticity, when circuits are particularly susceptible to external sensory input. Little is known, however, about the interrelation of cortical expansion and plasticity. Here, I shall propose a number of studies aiming to identify in the visual cortex the effect of cortical growth on the functional architecture, the role of plasticity for this process, and its implications on visual performance. Since cortical columns are found in most sensory systems, insights provided by these studies may be relevant for other systems as well.
