Beyond the Standard Model of Electro-weak interactions

I will briefly discuss the reasons that bring theoretical physicist to consider alternative models to the Standard One, such as the “naturalness issue”. Then I will describe Extra Dimensional models and their approach to these issues, and specifically so called Large Extra Dimensional models, describing physics in the energy range immediately following that explored by accelerators. I will then show how by introducing higher dimensional symmetries one can forbid the undesired couplings giving rise to the naturalness problem and still generate, in the low energy limit, the SM dynamics, and discuss the case of the SU(3) symmetry in five space-time dimensions. Although this effective simplified model does not represent a valid alternative to the Standard Model it does shed light on the form that the Lagrangian of the “True Alternative” should have in this energy range.
