Physics of Living Neural Networks

Neuronal networks from living hippocampal neurons that are grown on a dish outside of the brain display a remarkably poor repertoire of activity in comparison to their performance within the brain. We investigate why this happens using a number of simplifications, including geometrical constraints, pharmacology and stimulation modalities (chemical, electrical and magnetic), that enable the application of simple physical models. Graph and percolation theory, applied to this system, yield significant results on the network's connectivity. This has now been expanded to probe issues of development of the network that can be relevant to neurobiology.
